When supported by the linker the, linker plugin see -fuse-linker-plugin passes informationto the compiler about used and externally visible symbols. Whenthe linker plugin is not available, -fwhole-program should beused to allow the compiler to make these assumptions, which leadsto more aggressive optimization decisions. When a file is compiled with -flto without -fuse-linker-plugin, the generated object file is larger thana regular object file because it contains GIMPLE bytecodes and the usualfinal code see -ffat-lto-objects This means thatobject files with LTO information can be linked as normal objectfiles; if -fno-lto is passed to the linker, nointerprocedural optimizations are applied. Note that when -fno-fat-lto-objects is enabled the compile stage is fasterbut you cannot perform a regular, non-LTO link on them. When producing the final binary, GCC onlyapplies link-time optimizations to those files that contain bytecode.Therefore, you can mix and match object files and libraries withGIMPLE bytecodes and final object code. GCC automatically selectswhich files to optimize in LTO mode and which files to link withoutfurther processing.
